Here’s an affiliate marketing secret it took me a while to learn: you may love a product, but you may not be able to promote it successfully. For you, that product is a loser.

Check your products’ conversion rate
When you look for new affiliate products to promote one of the key indicators that this product might work for you is its conversion rate. It’s vital to know the conversion rate because you can often promote products which seemingly are wonderful (and which you like) but which have horrible conversion rates.

(The conversion rate is the rate at which it sells. The higher the conversion rate, the better. Some products convert at a rate of 10 per cent, but conversion rates of four and five per cent are more common. A conversion rate of 4% means that out of every 100 people you sent to the sales page, four made a purchase.)

Therefore if you’re new to affiliate marketing, start off promoting products which allow you to guess whether it’s worth testing your conversion rate. Clickbank and eBay both make it easy to see how many products are being sold in a particular market.

Clickbank’s “gravity” can be confusing for new users, but as a rule of thumb if you promote products which have a Clickbank gravity of over 100, you know that money is being made in that market.

On eBay, check how many auctions were cleared in the previous months. You can run various reports, and find out how many products were sold and what the top prices were. This makes eBay very appealing to affiliate marketers because you avoid promoting loser products.

1. Find a Niche Product You Want to Review

Your first step is to find a product which you want to promote. You won’t have the same amount of success with all products. In fact some products will completely bomb. Unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing which products will be great for you and which won’t it until you test products.

So choose one product and think about the people who would buy this product and why they would buy it.

2. Write the Review

Write a review of the product you’ve chosen.

Your review doesn’t have to be lengthy, it can be as short as 300 words. Ensure that you cover several of the benefits of the product as well as at least one of the product’s drawbacks. (No product is perfect.)

Of course it helps if you’ve actually used the product. If you haven’t used the product yourself, research other people’s reactions to the product.

3. Post the Review on Squidoo

Squidoo has great page rank, and is a very popular site. Create a lens on Squidoo, and post your review there. Lenses are indexed by Google within a short time, which means that your article will start appearing in the search engine results pages within a few days — occasionally within hours (depending on the number of people searching for information on the product).

4. Advertise Your Review on Free Classifieds Sites

There are many free online classified sites which are ideal for sending traffic to your lens. Write a couple of small advertisements directing people to the Squidoo lens you’ve created. Depending on the keywords you’ve chosen, and the competition for those keywords, you’ll start getting results almost immediately.

Is it possible to make money within 24 hours? Yes indeed it is. I’ve made sales of affiliate products within 24 hours, and one affiliate marketer I know made $492 within hours of posting his review on Squidoo, and then advertising the lens on free classifieds sites.

Online Marketing: 3 Easy, Free Tips

Online marketing can be expensive, but here are three easy free tips you can use today.

1. Edit the keywords on older webpages.

As your business grows you learn more about your customers. You learn what brings them to a webpage, and you know what they’re looking for.

Check out older pages on your website and edit the keywords to reflect what you now know about your customers. Change ineffective keywords to “buying” keywords. You may need to edit the pages’ content slightly to reflect your new keywords.

2. Create a list.

If you already have a customer list, create another one.

The lifeblood of any business is it your contact list. You should have many lists of both prospects and buyers.

Today create one list — you can advertise the list in any way you please.

As incentive for people to sign up to your list, give them a freebie.

3. Review your upsells.

You do have upsells don’t you? (The classic upsell: “Will you have fries with that?”)

Whatever you’re selling you should always have an upsell. The type of upsell may be directly related to a product, or it may be something completely different.

If you don’t have any upsells for your products, spend an hour or so thinking about how you can create at least one. Almost any business or industry lends itself to upsells, so if you are not using them you’re missing out on income.
